Vice President of Absorption

BOSS Energy has been retained by a leading DAC business who are seeking a Vice President of Absorption to join their team in Germany. The business has developed a breakthrough, low temperature direct air capture (DAC) technology. Not only does this technology directly reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but the absorption process produces hydrogen, thus reducing dependency on hydrocarbons and eliminating carbon simultaneously.

This nascent technology is at an exciting stage of growth and, having successfully raised EUR11m in seed funding, they are now looking to take this technology out of the lab and into the field. Reporting directly to their COO/CTO, you will be responsible to provide leadership for the creation of strategic product and technology development roadmaps for both short- and long-term activities. Whilst not directly responsible for the engineering of the project, you will play a significant role in achieving the organisations’ goal of deploying a pilot project in Canada by Q4 2025.

  • Absorption technology development is a key driver of how the organisation performs in both the short and long term. You will have full ownership and responsibility for pushing this progress with an emphasis placed on developing robustness of the core technology and its performance in the field.
  • You will help nurture technology solutions through lifecycle: concept, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, deployment, and refinement.
  • You will oversee the progression of the absorption technology though each TRL, ensuring that the team and technology are meeting key performance targets, providing functional and processual guidance to team members and senior management on the technologies developmental progress.
  • You will guide projects by ensuring efficiency, learning, methodologies, and support. You will drive cross-functional collaboration, synergies, and innovation initiatives, enhancing R&D productivity through internal networks, innovation committees, and shared tools.
  • You will define the Innovation Strategy for the business unit – the team spans chemists, engineers, and process engineers (researchers). You will be responsible to make sure all of their tasks (two-week sprints) are well planned, aligned and in sync with a thought-through technology roadmap.
  • You will define and implement key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure the success and impact of innovation initiatives. Regularly assess and report progress to stakeholders/leadership.
  • You will represent the business externally, building and maintaining strong connections with academia and industry experts to evaluate, understand and participate in the latest technology and macro-market trends.
  • You will facilitate R&D productivity by leading on shared tools as well as implementing standards on the way to work.
  • Oversee Lab, R&D experiments with regards to guidelines, quality standards, speed and level of information/result sharing.
  • Consolidate rapid knowledge development in the absorption technology organization into holistic knowledge base / state of the technology.

Key Competencies

  • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering or similar – Master’s Degree with extensive industrial experience can be considered.
  • 3-5 years’ industrial experience with a similar organization.
  • Exceptionally strong management skills and prior experience delivering R&D programmes to field environments.
  • Conversational level German is a bonus – their daily working language is English.
  • Passion for scaling climate solutions, commitment to taking action and a strong work ethic.
  • Exceptionally good at information gathering and structuring.
  • Eager and capable to drive a high level of team performance and culture of joint achievement.
