About The Role

We are seeking a full-time, remote Junior UI/UX Designer to join our talented team supporting a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) project. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to meaningful work that directly impacts veterans and their access to essential services. The ideal candidate will apply Human-Centered Design principles to develop and refine user-centric applications, ensuring they are intuitive, accessible, and aligned with federal standards such as Section 508. You will collaborate closely with Business Analysts, developers, and stakeholders to translate complex requirements into engaging and accessible design solutions. Your work will include creating wireframes, prototypes, and design systems, conducting user research, and supporting accessibility compliance efforts. This position provides a platform to grow your skills in a fast-paced environment committed to public service, accessibility, and innovative design practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or a related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of proven experience as a UI/UX Designer with a strong portfolio demonstrating user-centered and accessible design work
  • Solid understanding of Human-Centered Design (HCD) principles
  • Experience designing accessible interfaces supporting Section 508 compliance
  • Proficiency in design and prototyping tools such as Figma
  • Experience working within Agile development environments with iterative feedback cycles
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams to translate user needs into effective design solutions

Additional Qualifications

  • Familiarity with VA Digital Service guidelines and the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS)
  • Experience supporting federal or government projects (VA, DHA, HHS, etc.)
  • Knowledge of design systems, design tokens, and scalable UI frameworks
  • Experience with additional tools such as Axure, Miro, Mural, Jira, or Confluence
  • Experience supporting accessibility audits, testing, or remediation efforts

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Business Analysts, developers, and stakeholders to translate requirements into intuitive design solutions
  • Design wireframes, mockups, and prototypes utilizing tools like Figma to effectively communicate design concepts
  • Translate complex workflows into user-friendly and accessible interfaces that meet user needs
  • Contribute to and maintain comprehensive design systems, UI patterns, and documentation for consistency and scalability
  • Conduct user research, usability testing, and analyze feedback to inform and refine design decisions
  • Formulate research-driven questions to support indirect user discovery when direct access is limited
  • Synthesize research insights into actionable design improvements to enhance user experience
  • Design applications in compliance with Section 508 accessibility standards and best practices
  • Serve as an accessibility resource across teams, providing guidance to developers and testers
  • Support accessibility testing, audits, and remediation processes to ensure compliance
  • Translate accessibility requirements and findings into clear, actionable guidance for development teams
  • Work within Agile teams, incorporating iterative feedback from stakeholders and developers to improve design quality
  • Perform additional tasks as needed to support project success and team objectives
