A requirements engineer is responsible for systematically gathering, documenting, reviewing, and managing the requirements for a system, product, or project throughout its entire life cycle.

Your Responsibilities

Requirements elicitation

  • Conduct discussions with stakeholders (interviews, workshops, observation, questionnaires)
  • Analyze business processes
  • Understand the goals, problems, and wishes of stakeholders

Requirements analysis and documentation

  • Structure requirements, prioritize them, and check them for completeness
  • Ensure consistency, feasibility, and clarity
  • Document requirements in suitable formats (e.g., specifications, use cases, user stories, UML models)

Requirements validation and coordination

  • Coordinate requirements with stakeholders and the project team
  • Clarify contradictions and misunderstandings
  • Ensure that the requirements support the business objectives

Requirements management

  • Control changes to requirements (change management)
  • Establish traceability (from the requirement to implementation and testing)
  • Maintain requirements throughout the project lifecycle

Communication and mediation

  • Act as an interface between the business department and development
  • Moderate different stakeholder perspectives
  • Present technical issues in a way that is understandable to business departments and vice versa.

Requirements

  • Analytical thinking and structured approach
  • Knowledge of testing methodology (e.g., ISTQB standard)
  • Experience with testing tools (manual and automated)
  • Basic understanding of software development (e.g., programming, CI/CD)
  • Communication and teamwork skills
