We are seeking an experienced and highly organized Director/Head of Legal Operations to join our team. This role is essential in supporting the legal department’s operational effectiveness by managing legal processes, ensuring regulatory compliance, overseeing risk management efforts and projects, and coordinating legal support for our residential communities and property management partners. The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of landlord-tenant law, property compliance standards, and contract management practices in the residential real estate sector.

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and highly organized Director/Head of Legal Operations to join our team. This role is essential in supporting the legal department’s operational effectiveness by managing legal processes, ensuring regulatory compliance, overseeing risk management efforts and projects, and coordinating legal support for our residential communities and property management partners. The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of landlord-tenant law, property compliance standards, and contract management practices in the residential real estate sector.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Operations & Process Management:
- Develop, implement, and maintain efficient legal processes and standard operating procedures.
- Manage document workflows related to leases, notices, tenant disputes, evictions, and property compliance.
- Track and maintain legal documents, contracts, and correspondence in a secure and organized system.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local residential housing laws (e.g., Fair Housing Act, habitability standards, rent control ordinances).
- Coordinate internal audits and risk assessments across residential portfolios.
- Partner with property and leasing teams to ensure timely responses to tenant complaints, fair housing claims, and code enforcement matters.
- Manage relationships with external legal counsel and eviction attorneys.
- Track litigation, eviction cases, housing disputes, and other legal proceedings.
- Oversee and coordinate responses to legal notices, subpoenas, and court filings.
- Oversee legal tech tools including document management systems, e-signature platforms, and eviction tracking databases.
- Ensure proper data retention (including litigation holds) and accessibility protocols for residential property legal matters.
- Lead legal and operational compliance projects, including lease template updates, policy reviews, and regulation change rollouts.
- Develop and deliver training materials for site managers, leasing agents, and maintenance staff on legal topics (e.g., lease enforcement, tenant rights, fair housing).
- Bachelor’s degree required; paralegal certification or JD preferred.
- 10+ years of legal operations, compliance, or legal project management experience, preferably in residential real estate or property management.
- Strong working knowledge of landlord-tenant law, residential leasing, and fair housing compliance.
- Experience managing eviction processes and tenant-related legal matters.
- Proficiency with legal and property management platforms (e.g., Yardi, Salesforce, Propertyware, etc.).
- Strong communication and organizational skills; able to interface effectively with legal, property, and executive teams.
- Experience working in or with residential property management firms, HOAs, or affordable housing providers.
- Familiarity with state-specific housing laws.
- Experience with legal budgeting and vendor management.
