About The Role
We are seeking a talented and creative Graphic Designer to join our dynamic Creative Department on a 12-month fixed-term contract. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the visual identity and strategic communication of The National Gallery. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for delivering innovative, effective, and accessible design solutions across a broad spectrum of projects. Your work will directly impact the visitor experience, brand campaigns, exhibition design, and internal and external communications. The successful candidate will have a keen eye for detail, a strong portfolio demonstrating previous experience in museums, galleries, or similar cultural institutions, and the ability to translate complex concepts into compelling visual narratives. This position requires a proactive, imaginative thinker who can work independently and collaboratively, managing multiple projects within tight deadlines.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a degree or equivalent qualification in Graphic Design, Communication Design, or a related field. Proven experience working in museums, galleries, or cultural organizations is highly desirable. A strong portfolio showcasing a diverse range of design work, including branding, exhibition design, campaign visuals, and print collateral, is essential. Proficiency in industry-standard design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is required. The candidate should demonstrate excellent attention to detail, creative problem-solving skills, and the ability to interpret and execute project briefs effectively. Strong communication skills and the ability to work well under pressure are also important qualities for success in this role.
Responsibilities
Design and develop compelling visual content for a variety of projects, including brand campaigns, exhibition graphics, wayfinding systems, and promotional materials. Collaborate closely with curators, marketing teams, and external partners to ensure that all design outputs align with the Gallery’s strategic objectives and brand guidelines. Create engaging and accessible exhibition designs that enhance visitor engagement and understanding. Develop clear, legible, and aesthetically pleasing wayfinding and signage solutions to improve visitor navigation and overall experience. Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery while maintaining high-quality standards. Participate in creative brainstorming sessions and contribute innovative ideas to enhance the Gallery’s visual storytelling. Support the production process from concept through to final execution, liaising with printers and suppliers as necessary. Maintain an organized digital archive of all design assets and ensure consistency across all visual communication channels.
