About the Role

Aquila Interactive is seeking an experienced Game Content Designer to help build and expand the content of our grand strategy titles.

This role is focused on creating the systems-driven content that brings a living world to life: historical characters, events, decisions, technologies, political movements, economic systems, narrative chains, national content, and other gameplay content that interacts with complex simulation mechanics.

We are specifically looking for candidates with prior professional experience creating game content for strategy, simulation, management, RPG, or sandbox titles. Experience with grand strategy games is highly preferred.

You will work closely with designers and programmers to create content that is both historically grounded and mechanically engaging.

Responsibilities

  • Design and create large volumes of gameplay content for grand strategy games.
  • Develop event chains, decisions, technologies, laws, policies, characters, missions, objectives, and other content systems.
  • Balance content against economic, political, military, and social simulation systems.
  • Collaborate with system designers to ensure content supports broader gameplay goals.
  • Research historical topics and translate them into compelling gameplay experiences.
  • Write clear design documentation and content specifications.
  • Review and iterate on existing content based on feedback, testing, and analytics.
  • Work closely with implementation teams to ensure content is correctly integrated into the game.
  • Identify opportunities to improve player engagement, replayability, and historical authenticity through content design.

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of professional game development experience in a content design, narrative design, quest design, mission design, or equivalent role.
  • Experience shipping at least one commercial game title.
  • Strong understanding of strategy, simulation, management, RPG, or sandbox game design.
  • Demonstrated experience creating interconnected gameplay content at scale.
  • Excellent written communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote development environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Comfortable working with spreadsheets, databases, and large content sets.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience working on grand strategy games.
  • Experience with Paradox-style design principles and content structures.
  • Experience with scripting systems, data-driven content pipelines, or game editors.
  • Familiarity with historical research and interpretation.
  • Experience balancing complex systems and economies.
  • Modding experience for grand strategy titles such as Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, Victoria, Crusader Kings, or similar games.
  • Experience working with live games and post-launch content updates.

What Success Looks Like

Successful candidates are able to:

  • Create content that feels meaningful rather than repetitive.
  • Understand how individual pieces of content affect larger game systems.
  • Maintain quality while producing content at significant scale.
  • Balance historical authenticity with engaging gameplay.
  • Collaborate effectively across disciplines and accept iterative feedback.

Application Requirements

Please include:

  • Resume/CV
  • Portfolio or work samples
  • List of shipped titles and contributions
  • Any relevant design documentation, content samples, mod projects, or published work
  • In your application, please briefly describe the most complex content system you have personally designed and implemented.
