Company Description

At Open Ring (www.o-ring.tech), we’re behind the world’s first open-source smart ring platform, built for researchers, startups, and developers. We’re building a community-driven ecosystem for wearable tech innovation. As we scale, we’re eager to welcome exceptional talent ready to contribute to a global movement.

Role Overview

We are looking for a freelance CAD designer to support the development of a smart ring housing prototype. The role is focused on refining the mechanical design, preparing production-ready CAD files, and supporting fast prototype iteration for 3D printing and manufacturing.

You will work closely with the founders and technical team to turn the current concept into a functional, wearable, and manufacturable ring housing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Refine the CAD design of a smart ring housing, including shell structure, fit, locking/assembly mechanism, and external form.
  • Create and update CAD files, including native working files, STEP, STL, and other required formats.
  • Adjust the design for comfort, wearability, edge softness, wall thickness, and overall product feel.
  • Ensure internal space and structure support hardware components such as PCB, battery, sensors, haptic motor, and charging/contact areas.
  • Prepare files for 3D printing and production.
  • Review and improve existing CAD files for manufacturability, assembly, and structural reliability.
  • Create multiple design iterations where needed and clearly document changes between versions.
  • Support transition from prototype design toward mold/manufacturing preparation.

Qualifications

  • Strong experience in CAD design for small consumer products, wearables, electronics housings, or precision plastic parts.
  • Experience designing for 3D printing, prototyping, and eventual manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in CAD software and ability to provide native files, STEP, and STL exports.
  • Good understanding of tolerances, wall thickness, locking mechanisms, assembly constraints, and DFM principles.
  • Ability to work with compact internal hardware layouts and tight spatial constraints.
  • Experience with wearable products, rings, jewelry, medical/wellness devices, or small electronics housings is a strong plus.
  • Fast, practical, detail-oriented, and able to work independently on a freelance/temporary basis.
  • Clear communicator who can provide realistic timelines, progress updates, and structured file versions.
