About Soter

Soter is a global leader in AI innovation for industrial businesses. Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Chicago, we build SoterAI — an AI-powered platform used by companies across manufacturing, logistics, insurance, transportation, construction, and energy to prevent workplace risk, automate business workflows, and turn data into decisions. Our product and engineering team spans the US, Poland, and Estonia. We partner with 100+ companies worldwide and are on a mission to make every industrial business smarter, safer, and more efficient through AI.

The Opportunity

We're looking for an Environmental Compliance Specialist to join us as a contract or part-time builder. You'll work directly with the Soter team to design and build AI-powered environmental compliance workflows inside SoterAI. This isn't a consulting gig — you're helping us shape how environmental professionals will work in the future.

No software engineering required. What we need is your subject matter expertise, workflow design thinking, and the ability to write clear, structured guides that teach AI how to handle real environmental compliance work.

This role can be undertaken alongside your fulltime employment.

What You'll Do

  • Design AI workflows for environmental compliance scenarios: spill response, permit exceedance, incident investigation, permit management, environmental audits, ESG and resource reporting, and waste management
  • Write interaction guides and decision logic that help AI walk users through real compliance situations
  • Test workflows against real-world scenarios and refine based on feedback
  • Collaborate with our product team to translate compliance expertise into platform features
  • Identify gaps in our environmental coverage and propose new workflow areas

What We're Looking For

  • US based
  • 5+ years of hands-on environmental compliance experience in industry, consulting, or a regulatory background
  • Deep knowledge of environmental regulations, permit systems, and compliance workflows
  • Ability to break complex compliance processes into clear, logical steps
  • Strong written communication — you can explain technical concepts in plain language
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and iteration; you're building something new, not following a playbook
  • Genuine curiosity about how AI can improve environmental work
  • Self-directed — you manage your own time and don't need hand-holding

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with ESG reporting frameworks such as GRI, SASB, CDP, or TCFD
  • Knowledge of California environmental regulations including Cal/EPA, Regional Water Boards, and CARB
  • Prior exposure to AI tools, prompt engineering, or workflow automation
  • Experience with ISO 14001 or environmental management systems

What You'll Get

  • Flexibility — contract or part-time, fully remote, work the hours that fit your life
  • Meaningful work — you're making environmental compliance smarter
  • Frontier access — be part of the team shaping how AI transforms industrial work
  • Direct collaboration — work closely with product and other domain experts, not through layers of management
  • Competitive compensation commensurate with experience and scope
