For our client, we are currently looking for a Director of Software Project Management



THE CLIENT

Our client is a tech-bio startup that develops cutting-edge AI methods in genome, protein and large language models to accelerate drug discovery and translational medicine. Due to their rapid growth they are looking to expand their team in Basel, Zurich and Lausanne.



YOUR ROLE:

We are seeking an experienced Director of Software Project Management to establish and lead the project management function. This critical role involves implementing and embedding an Agile framework across technical and research teams and establishing a culture of continuous improvement and project management excellence. You will be instrumental in ensuring innovative AI and software projects are delivered efficiently, meeting objectives for timeliness and budget adherence.


This role requires an operationally oriented leader who can provide expert guidance, foster collaboration across our distributed teams, and drive execution excellence in a fast-changing research and development environment.



YOUR TASKS:

  • Your responsibility will be to champion, implement, and institutionalize appropriate program and project management Agile methodologies throughout the company, tailoring it to effectively support both the software development and research project lifecycles.
  • You will establish and lead a Program Management framework that coordinates interdependent projects, manages dependencies, and ensures alignment with overall company strategy and technical vision.
  • You will manage external vendors that are responsible for developing and implementing AI and software assets for the company. At the time of hiring, you will serve as the initial Scrum Master in an ongoing project.
  • You will coach and support the technical and research focused teams in both Basel and Zurich, on the effective application of Agile principles and practices. This includes establishing project management tools such as Jira, facilitating Scrum events, and promoting continuous improvement.
  • You will oversee the entire project lifecycle, from scope definition and planning to execution and delivery, ensuring projects align with the mission and goals of the company.
  • You will establish a governance framework for project prioritization, resource allocation, and risk management across the portfolio of initiatives.
  • A key part of your role involves establishing and managing protocols for software testing and quality assurance.
  • With time, you will play a crucial role in developing and executing launch plans for software products and AI method releases.
  • You will create and monitor the metrics and KPIs that measure the efficiency of teams and processes.
  • You will define and maintain reporting mechanisms to provide updates on project status, risks, and resource utilization to the C-level executive team.



REQUIREMENTS

  • Proven experience in project management and track record of successfully delivering complex software projects, meeting time and budget targets.
  • Practical understanding of Agile methodologies is essential, coupled with hands-on experience in implementing and managing Scrum frameworks within technical or research-oriented teams.
  • Experience overseeing software testing methodologies and quality assurance processes is required.
  • Proficiency with project management tools, such as Jira or similar platforms.
  • Leadership capabilities, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the proven ability to coach, mentor, and influence cross-functional teams.
  • Experience operating within a fast-paced startup environment is a distinct advantage.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML projects or experience within the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or scientific research sectors would be a significant asset.
  • Excellent command of English is required; proficiency in German or French is beneficial given our operational locations.
  • The role requires the ability to travel between our Basel, Zurich, and Lausanne sites as needed.
