About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Data Scientist or Software Engineer to join our Planner Evaluation team. This team plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and reliability of Waymo's autonomous driving software. The primary focus of this role is to develop, validate, and manage safety metrics that are fundamental to assessing and improving the quality of the onboard software stack, including the Planner and Perception modules. You will collaborate closely with stakeholders across the organization to understand core use cases, analyze complex data, and provide expert insights to optimize metric design and interpretation. Your work will directly influence how Waymo evaluates its autonomous systems, ensuring they meet rigorous safety standards as the product expands into new platforms and territories. This hybrid position reports to a Data Science Manager and offers an exciting opportunity to impact the future of autonomous mobility.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related quantitative field
  • 7+ years of industry experience in data science, software engineering, or related roles
  • Strong communication and leadership skills to coordinate across multiple teams and projects
  • Exceptional data analysis skills with a focus on metric validation and simplification
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C++, Python, and SQL
  • Experience designing and implementing A/B experiments and statistical evaluations
  • Ability to translate ambiguous business requirements into effective technical solutions

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and validate driving behavior metrics to assess autonomous system performance
  • Build datasets using simulations and real-world data for model training and metric validation
  • Develop and execute A/B experiments to compare different software versions and evaluate improvements
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand their needs and provide expert recommendations on metric interpretation and evaluation
  • Validate and refine metrics to ensure robustness across diverse platforms and geographic regions
  • Ensure metrics are aligned with safety standards and support continuous system improvements
  • Engage in rapid data analysis and prototyping to support decision-making processes
