The Company

We are a high-growth consumer brand with doubling revenue year-over-year. Having established ourselves with premium physical and consumable products for cats, we are exploring smart products and their role in feline wellness.

The Reality

  • We have a massive, growing stream of raw sensor data (load cells, proximity sensors, etc.) and real world usage footage landing in Google Cloud/BigQuery.
  • This data is currently "noisy" and requires an architect to turn raw signals into discrete, actionable cat behavioural events.
  • Sole Responsibility: You will be our first dedicated data hire, reporting directly to the CTO (Employee #1 at Pebble). You will own everything from high-level model architecture to the nitty-gritty of setting up and maintaining data pipelines.

What You’ll Actually Do

Eventually build a team and structure that can be depended on to tackle the items below. In the short term, you will need to roll up your sleeves.

  • Engineer the Plumbing: You will personally set up and manage the data pipelines in GCP and establish event logging. There is no "data engineering team" yet, you own the system from ingestion to insight.
  • Complex Classification: Develop and deploy models that classify raw sensor data into behavioral events. This is a "zero-to-one" problem involving signal processing and ML.
  • Strategic Insights: Build behavioural models to provide the executive team with evidence for growth vs. R&D decisions.
  • Health Intelligence: Collaborate with experts to define and validate meaningful correlations across behavioural events. Build the analytical foundation - from statistical modelling to early pattern detection - that turns raw sensor data into insights for cats and their owners.
  • Hardware Influence: Work with our hardware design and engineering teams to influence future hardware specifications based on your data findings.
  • Software Influence: Work with our digital design and software engineering teams to influence customer-facing display of cat behavioural insights based on your data findings.
  • Path to Leadership: This role is designed to evolve into a lead position as we scale. You are the foundation of what will become our Data Science department.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in data science or signal processing, ideally in high-growth companies.
  • End-to-End Capability: Comfort with being a "team of one," capable of both high-level strategy and low-level engineering.
  • Proficiency with Python, Google Cloud Platform, and BigQuery.
  • Preferred: Direct experience working with health-related data or biometric signals.
  • Passion for feline care and wellbeing
  • Based in Canada.

Personality Fit

You need to be dependable, results-oriented, move with urgency, work autonomously, and communicate clearly; translating complex technical concepts for a diverse set of stakeholders.

Compensation: Competitive salary. This role will define the technical moat of our next phase of growth.
