Position Overview
Our client is looking for a Communications Specialist to support their team 15 hours per week, on an ongoing  basis through June 2027. The Communications Specialist provides ongoing support to a conservation-focused organization's communications and philanthropy functions. This role is responsible for producing compelling, high-quality written content that elevates mission impact, supports donor engagement, and strengthens visibility across digital channels, media, and stakeholder groups.

The specialist will collaborate closely with internal teams, participate in weekly planning meetings, and manage a variety of short- and long-term storytelling and communications projects. Approximately 75% of the role is dedicated to writing, with additional responsibilities in media relations, light design work, and content organization.

Location: Fully Remote
Engagement: Freelance, up to 15 hours/week
Duration: Through June 2027


Key Responsibilities

  • Write stories, web features, newsletters, brochures, fact sheets, reports, appeal letters, and other donor- or public-facing materials.
  • Develop high-quality storytelling aligned with organizational brand standards, highlighting conservation outcomes and translating technical subject matter into engaging narratives.
  • Support the Development/Philanthropy team with materials including landowner outreach communications and campaign collateral.
  • Draft, edit, and proofread content to ensure clarity, accuracy, and alignment with accessibility and style guidelines.
  • Produce news releases and assist with media communications.
  • Research and develop media lists, update contact databases, and track media coverage.
  • Organize and source photos; provide light text and photo manipulation for collateral and simple layout needs.
  • Participate in weekly meetings to align on priorities, plan deliverables, and review upcoming projects.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and partners to gather background information, conduct interviews, and ensure accuracy of content across short-term assignments and longer-term initiatives.
  • Support communications workflows related to large-scale projects, including federal grant initiatives.
  • Assist with occasional event support, including basic photo/video capture for social media.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 6 years of experience in communications, journalism, marketing, public affairs, or a related field.
  • Exceptional writing abilities, with a strong portfolio demonstrating storytelling skill and the ability to translate complex or technical information into accessible narratives.
  • Experience in nonprofit communications strongly preferred.
  • Agency experience or journalism/newsroom background ideal.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively within dynamic project scopes.
  • Experience managing editorial calendars, timelines, and multi-stakeholder project workflows.
  • Strong curiosity and willingness to learn deeply about program areas and subject matter expertise.
  • Basic design capabilities, including text layout, photo manipulation, and use of branded templates in Canva; InDesign experience preferred.
  • Preferred background or familiarity with conservation, environmental issues, or ocean-related work.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
