Advocates Who Thrive is a mission-driven nonprofit foundation committed to championing dignity, growth, and inclusion for marginalized voices around the world. We believe that advocacy begins within — by building thriving, inclusive communities, and equipping change-makers with the tools and support they need to lead courageously.
Through education, coaching, policy / strategic advising, and capacity-building, we partner with grassroots and global allies to amplify the voices of those often unheard, working towards a future where thriving is a human right, not a privilege.
At AWT, we are more than an organization — we are a values-driven movement, powered by purpose, collaboration, and radical empathy.
We are seeking a passionate and skilled Board Member to join our team. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in shaping the future of Advocates Who Thrive by providing strategic oversight, ensuring responsible governance, and supporting the foundation’s continued growth. As a board member, you’ll help foster an adaptable and resilient organisation while upholding ethical and financial responsibilities. Your commitment will directly strengthen AWT’s mission to champion dignity, inclusion, and empowerment for those often unheard, helping to build a thriving, values-driven movement.
What we value:
- Adaptability: You’re comfortable navigating ambiguity and helping bring clarity.
- Responsibility: You understand that being on a board comes with real accountability — including financial and ethical responsibility.
- Integrity: You’re transparent, proactive, and not afraid to speak up when something feels off.
- Team spirit: We work together in an informal, respectful, and open-minded way.
We’re in the exciting phase of structuring things to make them work better — and more fail-proof. This means that not everything is perfectly in place yet. If you’re someone who likes, clear manuals and fixed systems… this might not be your moment. But if you dare to take risks, enjoy solving puzzles, and want to help shape a resilient organization — we’d love to meet you.
- Governance: Ensuring the organisation has and is following sound structures and processes.
- Accountability: holding the director and the rest of the organisation accountable for organisational performance and ensuring resources are used responsibly.
- Strategic Guidance: Offering critical reflection, input and support on major strategic decisions without steering daily operations.
- Legal and fiduciary duties: Ensuring compliance with legal, ethical and financial responsibilities.
- Supportive: Acting as sounding board for the organisation, offering expertise, perspective and networks where relevant.
- Attend bi-monthly board meetings, spend average 1-2 hours weekly.
There are different roles within the board (treasurer, chairperson, secretary), which in agreement with the other board members are divided among the different members.
- Strong skills in collaboration and decision-making
- Passion for social justice, equity, and community-led work
- Ability to work independently and remotely with strong time management
- Previous experience in a nonprofit or advocacy-based organization
- Multilingual fluency / intercultural fluency
- Lived experience related to the communities we serve
- A supportive and values-aligned team environment
- Flexibility and autonomy
- A platform to contribute to meaningful, global impact
As a token of our appreciation for your dedication, we offer the following:
- Travel Compensation: Reimbursement for travel expenses related to events or activities conducted on behalf of AWT.
- Learning & Development: Priority access to internal coaching, training, and development opportunities — plus possible access to partner programs.
- Annual Retreat Weekend: A fully-funded, relaxing team bonding retreat for connection and reflection.
- Monthly Community Meetings: Join us for mission-focused discussions and a delicious vegan dinner with fellow team members.
